What Should You Do In A Slip And Fall Accident Caused By Snow Or Ice?

If you have slipped and fallen on the ground on a snowy day, it is imperative that you resolve the situation effectively, especially if other factors may have contributed to your fall. For example, the right medical care will be able to diagnose an injury.

Here are 5 tips to follow if you have an accident where you slipped and fell.

Get Help

This will be the first line of defense that you have for yourself. We recommend that you call 911 as soon as you are able. And if not you, then we recommend asking someone to call on your behalf.

The police can assess and document details of your fall. They can also call an ambulance after they secure details about the accident.

Get Medical Attention

After the police arrive and help, they should also call an ambulance to escort you to the hospital. If you aren’t injured, you might not need medical attention.

However, we do advise that you at least visit the doctor to make sure that you are medically okay if you are not sure. Receiving medical attention right away will ensure that you recover promptly.

You will also have documentation regarding the accident in the event one party files a legal claim.

Take Pictures

Unleash your inner detective and document the scene of your fall. You should have pictures to serve as evidence for existing conditions at the time of your fall.

Take a picture of exactly where you slipped, and a picture of the injury as well. If you are unable to take pictures of the area where the fall occurred, you should ask a family member or friend to take pictures and document the surroundings for you.

Find a Witness

Situations such as a fall might not have any witnesses--you may be in an area with few people. However, if you are fortunate to have someone who did see you slip and fall, you should ask them if they would be willing to be a witness to the event.

If litigation ensures, then you will have someone to speak on your behalf of the truth of your case. Be sure to secure a telephone number and address of any witnesses. An eyewitness can help to make your claim more credible.

Report your fall. Oftentimes a property owner or landlord is unaware of what has happened on their property. So you should report the accident to them. If you are unable to do this, we recommend again asking a family member or friend to do so on your behalf.

If you are injured and you believe another party may carry liability for your injury, you should get a slip and fall lawyer to protect your legal rights. A lawyer can notify your property owner and other parties that may need to be informed of the accident, and file a claim within the statute of limitations.
